Fill Material

Fill products are aggregate and composite based materials that are used to enhance and create specific desired playing characteristics in synthetic putting greens. These fill materials are not necessary on some turfs within our line. Several different types of fill materials are discussed below. Consult the Turf Descriptions pages for specific turf recommendations.

Fill Materials:

  1. Silica sand is most commonly associated with sandblasting. This product comes in different sizes and its use is based on desired playing effects. This material is graded and sized. It is available in very fine, fine, medium and course grit sizes and can be found in most states.
  2. Green Lightning - This fill material is a special size silica sand that has been colored to match the varied colors of grass that makeup a bent grass green. This sand is of a rounded and shaved nature that resists packing and yet allows for integration into our densest turf.
  3. Duraflec is a proprietary product that is sold under many trade names. Almost all industry companies use this product in some form or another. Some companies refer to this product as "top dressing" but there is no secret to it. Its features are that it resists compacting and comes in various colors. Its large size may make it impractical for use in a dense synthetic turf. It also can cause an unnatural ball roll when used with a non-dense turf.
  4. Rubber grinds are yet another fill material but are still in the experimental stages. They are composed of rubber by-products that have been processed to a very fine size. Testing is continuing on several types and blends. Our hope is to produce a more consistent and desirable fill material.

Remember that some SYNLawn Golf turf requires little or no fill material. Consult the Turf Description pages for individual product data regarding sand fill.
